Christmas 2009 Tech Gifts

Wave your geek flag this holiday season.  There’s a never ending list of technology gifts to choose from every year and this year is no exception.  This has been an Apple year for me but there are so many awesome tech gifts on the market at just about every price point.  This means everyone on your list can end 2009 more tech happy and savvy than ever.   Here are just a few ideas to consider:

 1.  Apple iPhone 3G or 3GS.                  iPhone 3G                   iPhone 3GS

Reviews are good and the price is right starting at $99 for the 8GB 3G.  It’s a phone, an iPod and a web device all at the same time and comes with earbuds that have a built in mouthpiece the size of a pinhole as well as a portable charger.   I wonder, is Apple the new Tiffany?  Hmm…..

 2.  Apple iPod Shuffle

This sweet little device is smaller than most keys, is available in 5 colors and polished stainless steel.  It’s available with 2GB to 4GB of storage and holds between 500 and 1000 songs.   This MP3 even talks to you!  That’s right; since there is no screen to scroll through it talks you through playlists and tells you song titles.  Most functions are operated from the easily accessible earbud cord.  For those who like to get a bit of exercise, just clip it on and go.  Starting at $59, the new iPod shuffle in a word…Nice!

3.  Samsung Reclaim.                       Samsung Reclaim Box (Photo: Sprint)

This great looking eco-friendly phone is made from 80% recyclable material.    Get this… the phone costs less than $50 after rebate and $2 from the sale of each phone benefits the Nature Conservancy’s Adopt an Acre program!  A sweet deal, with a contract of course.   In this case, green IS the new green!

 4.  Amazon Kindle.   Kindle: Amazon's 6" Wireless Reading Device (Latest Generation)

It’s 10.2 ounces, as thin as a pencil and is lightweight, is it a bird? is it a plane? No, it’s the Amazon Kindle.   With the 3G wireless network, you can download books from anywhere to your Kindle anytime.   Here’s the good part, in addition to having more than 300,000 books at your disposal in less than 60 seconds, no PC is required.  What’s really nice is with the new text-to-speech feature, Kindle reads newspapers, magazines and blogs out loud to you!  Now, I call that one hot reader!

 5.  The BlueLounge.   bluelounge sanctuary

A neat way to charge over 1500 electronic devices.  This tech valet has 12 built in adaptors allowing you to charge your cell phone, portable game console, iPod and Bluetooth headset simultaneously for about $129.  It does all of this while looking really good.

 6.  Eton FR300 and Voicelink FR1000.                  Product Details

In the event of a power outage, you’ll want to have one of these  little multi-tasking devices on hand.  It’s way more than a radio and might be slightly under appreciated, that is until it’s needed.  The Eton FR300 and 1000 are attractive multi-function emergency NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) approved devices.  They’re a hand-crank flashlight, emergency radio and cell phone charger all in one.   They can be powered by a built-in rechargeable battery, hand-crank, AA batteries or an AC adaptor.  The FR1000 steps it up with the addition of a siren, voice operated transmission and 121 privacy codes.   They’re great for camping, fishing and even if you’re on safari.   Check out the Red Cross models, prices start at about $30.  Get someone started on an emergency preparedness kit this holiday season.
